HENRY SAWLEY (2) 1795 to 1887

Henry, like his father before him was a bargeman by trade. We know through various records that he was deaf. Henry married Honor (Honour) Keirle who was born on 11 November, 1798 in Middlezoy, Somerset (near Stoke St Gregory) Her family were well established in the area, having lived there for many generation. In fact, her line can be traced back to William Keirle who was born in 1618 at Othery, Somerset.

JOHN SELWAY.Solway/Sawley was born in 1819 and possibly a sailor and muster on a boat noted in the 1861 census stating that on the night of Sunday April 7, 1861 he was on a Newport River vessel.

TWINS MARY AND HENRY were baptised on 29th November 1821. Their lives were short as they were buried on 9th December 1821 at Stoke St Gregory – recorded as infants.

JANE SELWAY was born 1822, and was also deaf, but she seemed to become a central figure in the family. She married an Edward Vickery, born 1823 and locally. His occupation was a boilermaker. They had at least four children. These were George, Amelia, Lucy and Walter.

George married someone by the name of Kate and was a labourer in an iron works. They had at least two children, Lily and Stanley.

Lucy Vickery (1862) married Albert Thomas Mead. Albert was the son of Obadiah Mead who, as well as being a bargeman, was the landlord of the Boat and Anchor Inn at Huntsworth. Today The Boat & Anchor is still standing and trading.

In fact, Lucy’s parents Jane and Edward Vickery, along with Jane’s father Henry (2), after the death of his wife, were living in one of the cottage next door to the pub. (Honor died in 1844 at the age of 48 while Henry survived to the ripe old age of one hundred years) These cottages may have been part of Mead’s Buildings which were to the east of the Boat & Anchor, or they may have been further to the east. Jane and Edward’s son, Walter, born 1862, was a blacksmith at the age of 19 according to census of 1881.

WILLIAM SELWAY (1825) was a boatman and married an Eliza from Taunton. They had two daughters named Eliza and Mary.

LOUISA SELWAY was born in 1828 and had a son named Henry. However a record of marriage has not yet been found.

MARY ANN SELWAY was born in 1830 and had a son named Robert. No record of marriage was found in this case.

ELIZA SELWAY was born in 1834. and was living further west along the canal in a place that was known as Old Basin. When the canal was first constructed, the canal joined the River Parrett at a point slightly to the west of where the railway crosses the river. Old Basin was where the canal widened to allow the turning of barges before entering the river. It is presumed there must have been a lock there. There were six cottages on each side of Old Basin, which are still occupied to this day, but the six cottages have been knocked into three. Eliza Sawley lived in one of these cottages with Reuben West. The 1881 indicates that they were married, but to date we have no real evidence that they were ever married.

Someone, still living today, who remebers Eliza is certain that there was no marriage to Reuben, but they did have 11 children:-

1. Charles Henry West/Salway married Mary Palmer and moved to Bristol.

2. Walter John West/Solway/Selway married Eliza Stacey

3. Reuben West

4. Francis Henry West/Solway married Priscilla Stacey. It is understood that Frank  ((Francis Henry West/Solway) walked to Cardiff with two of his brothers in search of work and found employment as a stoker in the gasworks there.

5. George Sawley/West

6. Mary Ann West/Sawley married Albert Forgan

7. Emma J West married Charles Williams

8. Elizabeth West

9. Fanny West/Sawley married William H Salter

10. Henry West

11. Lucy West married Henry A Rowland and moved to Birmingham.
