THE JONES FAMILY

Mary Gwenllian Jones

RICHARD JONES was born on 15th February 1807 at Cadoxton, South Wales. In some records the family name is John. At a particular period people with the family name John changed their name to Jones. However, it seems that our Richard Jones was also known as Dick Curtis and we are unsure how this came about. It is easy to understand how the name Richard was reduced to ´Dick´ but the change of Jones/John to Curtis is a bit of a puzzle. One suggested explanation is the Richard´s father died at a young age and therefore Richard was ‘adopted’ by a Curtis family. I have been unable to find records of Richard´s natural parents.

Richard married an Ann Thomas who was born on the 19th. January, 1813,at Sketty, Swansea. She was the daughter of Thomas and Emma Thomas. In 1851 Richard is recorded as a canal labourer .  A section from an historical book, `History of the Vale of Neath´ is shown below which states:

`From this little canal, issued in 1824, under the charge of the veteran bargeman, “Dick Curtis” (Richard Jones of Ty´r Efail, Rheola) the ten laden coal barges (containing Mr. Protheroe´s Cwmgwrach coal) which, accompanied by a brass band, heralded the opening of the Tennant Canal from Aberdulais to Swansea.`

Richard died at Ty'r Efail,  Llangattwg on January 22, 1891 and was buried in the graveyard of St Cadoc’s Church, Aberpergwm , Glyn Neath. (equivalent to St Catwg's) Ann died 19th. July, 1893 and was buried in the same graveyard.

(An interesting point concerning the graveyard at St Cadoc´s is that there stands something called the ´Murder Stone´. The following information carved upon it:

1823, To Record MURDER
This stone was erected over the body of Margaret Williams aged 26 A native of Carmarthenshire. Living in service in this Parish.  Who was found dead with marks of violence on her person, in a ditch on the marsh below this Churchyard on the morning of Sunday the Fourteenth of July, 1822.

Although the savage murderer escaped for a season the detection of man. yet God hath set his mark upon him either for time or eternity and the cry of blood will assuredly pursue him to certain and terrible but righteous Judgement

(Margaret Williams was a young girl who lived in the early 1800s. Originally from the rural West Wales farming community of Carmarthenshire, she was employed as a serving girl in the house of the local Squire and allegedly embarked on an affair with the Squire's son. In the summer of 1822 her lifeless body was found near the marshes - she had been strangled and her body thrown into a ditch. Suspicion immediately fell on the Squire's son amid rumours of a secret pregnancy, and several witnesses who had seen him with the girl on the night of her death. But times being what they were, no charges were ever brought.

She was buried in the Churchyard, not far from the spot where she had been found, and the locals erected the headstone you see above, positioning it to face the manor house. The trees to the front were cut down so that every morning when the Squire's son looked out of his window, he saw the gravestone looking back at him - a constant reminder of his crimes.)

Returning to the Jones Family:

BAGLAN HALL

It is believed that the Jones/John family were connected to Baglan Hall. However the exact connection is still unclear. It is known that a Catherine Jones who was born about 1774 was an heiress of Baglan Hall. Catherine was the daughter of Thomas John/Jones of Baglan, born 1783, and Catherine John.

Catherine Jones married a Griffith Llewelyn an established family in the area. By this marriage the Hall and Estate was passed on to the Llewelyn family. It is thought that there was some dispute over this situation.

A plaque on the wall or St Michael´s Church, Cwmavon states those members of the Baglan Hall family who are buried there. The names include THOMAS JONES who died on November 26th, 1816. It is beilived that Thomas Jones was connected to our Jones family. ...
