THE PHIPPS FAMILY

Fredrick William Harvey, known as the Soldier Poet was born in Gloucestershire in 1888. He composed many of his poems in prisoner of war camps and these were sent back to England during the First World War. One such poem is below.

In Flanders

I'm homesick for my hills again -
My hills again!
To see above the Severn plain,
Unscabbarded against the sky,
The blue high blade of Cotswold lie;
The giant clouds go royally
By jagged Malvern with a train
Of shadows. Where the land is low
Like a huge imprisoning O
I hear a heart that's sound and high,
I hear the heart within me cry:
"I'm homesick for my hills again -
My hills again!
Cotswold or Malvern, sun or rain!
My hills again!"

Harvey lived in the village of Yorkley at the end of his life and it is of Yorkley and its surrounding villages and countryside that he remembers in his poem. Villages such as Whitecroft, Pillowell, Yorkley, Coleford, Newland and Parkend and the earliest records concerning the Phipps family show that for many decades our ancestors lived their lives in this small group of West Dean villages. Many of the villages developed around the coal mines which became the main source of employment. At the demise of mining in the area people were forced to adapt to other, limited types of employment while very many others had to move to find work in different regions or countries.

William George Phipps was born in 1886 at West Dean, two years before Fredrick William Harvey and our records go back to his great grandfather Thomas Phipps of Newland, born in 1794. It should be noted that the ancestors of William George Phipps are strongly linked with other families in the Forest of Dean area. Families such as the Morse family, the Hawkins family and the Kear family. The Kears are a direct line and reach back to James Kear of 1490.

THOMAS PHIPPS OF NEWLAND, BORN 1794

(Please see added details of Thomas Phipps parents below)

We can trace records back to Thomas Phipps of Newland Parish, West Dean, Gloucestershire who was born in 1794. These were troubled times as a year before Britain had declared war on France and in the same year Louis XVI had been exicuted, leading to the Reign of Terror.

We know that Thomas was a blacksmith and that he lived at 8 Pillowell, West Dean in 1851. He and his family were still living in Pillowell in 1861. Thomas married a lady by the name of Maria Birt who was also born in 1794 within the Newland Parish. Thomas and Maria’s recorded children were George, William, John, Isaiah and Matilda. George, born in 1822, forms the direct line.

THE OTHER CHILDREN OF THOMAS PHIPPS, 1794

WILLIAM PHIPPS, 1820 who married a lady by the name of Ann of Much Birch, Herefordshire. William was a coal miner and they were residents at 165 Pillowell, West Dean in 1861. They had at least five children.

JOHN PHIPPS, 1828 whose wife was Annis Augusta Hewett 1838. John was recorded as being a coal miner. He died at Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire. Annis was the daughter of Thomas Hewett and Annis Kear. (The Kears being strongly connected to the Phipps family)

ISAIAH PHIPPS 1830 married twice. Firstly to Harriet 1833 and secondly to  Alice Bird, who was born in 1842. There were at least five children in the family. Isaiah was a blacksmith and the family are recorded as living at Pillowell in 1851 and 1861.

MATILDA PHIPPS 1836 to 1910. Matilda married Fredrick Morse, 1830 to 1878, of West Dean. Records of Fredrick’s direct family line go back to the mid seventeen hundreds. There are many very interesting facts concerning the decedents of Matilda and Fredrick as the marriage closely links the Phipps family with the Morse family, both of the West Dean area. In this case we will return to Matilda and Fredrick later in this account.

GEORGE PHIPPS,1822. As exlained earlier, our direct line is through George who was born at West Dean. The records show that George was an engine worker in 1851 census and in 1861. However the 1871 census notes him to be a blacksmith. In 1881 he was an engine driver at a colliery. He married Charlotte Kear, who was born in 1825 of Whitecroft. They married on 15th. April, 1843.

Charlotte’s family were well established in the area and her direct line of ancestors can be traced back as far as John (Johanes) Kear whose birth was in the early sixteen hundreds. As Charlotte was part of our direct line and it therefore seems worth showing the line below.

James Kear 1490 to 1569, wife Eleanor 1493 to 1577

James Kear 1515

George Kear 1549  wife Elizabeth Partridge 1552, married 1573

Henry Kear 1576 Newland, Clearwell, Glos, wife ?

Johanes(John) Keare b. 1606, wife Joan 1607

John(Johanes) Kear and wife unknown, wife born 1634

John Kear 1659 and wife Miriam 1662 married at Newland

John Kear of Newland 1695, and wife Elizabeth Thomas 1702

William Kear of Bream, 1726 -1804, and wife Eleanor 1726 – 1816. Also of Bream

Enoch Keare1771 – 1846 and his wife Hannah Hawkins 1776 - 1848

Enoch Keare (Kear), 1800 – 1857 and his wife Mary Baldwin who was born in 1804 at Whitecroft.

Charlotte Kear 1825 and her husband George Phipps 1822

Thomas Enoch Phipps 1861 and his wife Mary 1867

(Some records suggest that the line leads back to Ynyr, born 1030  King of Upper Gwent)

Many interesting events took place during the years surrounding the birth of George Phipps in 1822. 1820 saw George IV's accession to the throne while in 1821 Vepoleon Bonaparte died in St. Helena. In the same year Consable painted 'The Hay Wain'  which recorded an idealistic image of English country life. Shortly after, in 1825, saw a different record of life in England at the publication of Pepys Diary.

(Quote from Samuel Pepys .. 'I went out to Charing Cross to see Major General Harrison hanged, drawn, and quartered; which was done there, he looking as cheerful as any man could in that condition.')

Returning to George and Charlotte. They had eight children.  Elijah, Frances, Sannabia or Sannalya, (Spelling depending upon the records), Ann, George, Maria, Charlotte and Thomas Enoch. It is known that Frances married a James Brown of Bream while Thomas Enoch, born 1861, married a Newland lady named Mary who was born in 1867.

During the year of Thomas Enoch's birth, the American civil war started and Prince Albert died.

By 1891 Charlotte, at the age of 66, is recorded as living alone and it is therefore assumed that by this time she was a widow.

THOMAS ENOCH PHIPPS, 1861. Our direct line continues through Thomas Enoch Phipps and his wife Mary.  Thomas was born at Whitecroft, West Dean, Gloucestershire. He was a stationary engine driver at a colliery as recorded in 1901 and the family continued to live at Whitecroft at the time.

Stationary engines were the engines which were used at the collieries to pump water and draw coal to the surface. A stationary engine would be built at the top or on the side of a hill, and it would wind the rope onto a drum to haul wagons up. From that point, another rope wound by an engine further up the hill could be used to move the wagons on.

Thomas Enoch’s children were Fredrick B, Albert, George, Rose, Thomas Wesley, Dore G and William George.

George married someone named Bess. Rose married someone with the family name of Wedmore which was a common name in the area. Thomas Wesley spent much of his life in Japan and married a Japanese lady named Harue.

Added Feb 10, 2009:

Thanks to the help of a contact I have discovered the details of the parents of Thomas Phipps, 1794:

GEORGE PHIPPS b. 1748. d. 1798, married ISABELLA JAMES who was born on 6 October, 1748 at Bream, West Dean. Died in 1798. Isabella was the daughter of William and Mary James, both born about 1725.

George and Isabella´s children were Thomas 1794 (below) and Susannah Phipps, born 1795. Susannah married a James Jenkins and iron miner born in Bream in 1793. James ´parents were George Jenkins and Sarah Beach. Apparently the Beach family was in the wool dealing trade, which ties in with the Jenkins.

1 Bertie Frank Jordan-Phipps b 1881

Bertie Frank Jordan-Phipps b 1881 (page 19) Frank (Phipps) as he was known can be found on the 1891 census on Oldcroft (RG12/4338)

Your basic research is correct I agree he was the S/O Henry Phipps and Esther Jordan (nee Heyett)

In 1901 Frank can be found living, as a boarder, with Enoch Williams in Abercarn (RG13/4968)

My GGrandmother Catherine Ann Parry (nee Stanley) had married William Parry in the same year (She is called Kathleen on the census) RG13/4967

Therefore I suggest that William Parry was the first husband of Catherine Ann Stanley

About 1920 my GGrandmother moved to Parkend (Forest of Dean) probably with Frank Phipps.

Frank and my Great Grandmother brought up my mother Peggy Parry. My mother is registered at Park End school (1931) as Peggy Phipps guardian Frank Phipps.

Frank my GGrandmother and my mother were living at 24 The Square Parkend

I have not found any marriage record for my GGrandmother and Frank Phipps and beleive my GGrandmother was still married to William Parry when she died.

I have not found any death or burial record for frank but believe he is buried in St Pauls at Parkend between 1938 and 1948.
